Some of the best CD rates that I've found this year include 4% to 5% APY. Since my CD ladder is set up with a mix of short-term and long-term CDs, once the short-term CDs mature, I replace them with long-term CDs instead of short-term ones. As the short-term CDs mature and are reinvested in long-term CDs, the original long-term CDs will become closer to maturing. That means I can potentially reinvest the cash from a short-term CD into a longer term one that offers a higher APY. Right now, I don't have the funds to invest all of my cash into long-term CDs.

Billionaire investor David Tepper's hedge fund increased its bets on Chinese tech stocks during the first three months of 2024, while dialing back exposure to some key domestic names. Appaloosa Management's quarterly report on Wednesday showed that Alibaba is now its top holding after buying several hundred million dollars worth of shares. The fund also revealed that it holds put options against Microsoft , which could indicate more selling in the second quarter. Outside of technology, Appaloosa exited a small position in hospital stock HCA Holdings and added a small position in Boeing . Chinese tech stocks have been trending higher, however, with the KWEB up 19% in the second quarter.

We'll review a "broken wing put butterfly" options trade to position bearishly on Costco. With a business model focused on memberships and rock-bottom prices, Costco (COST) has grown much faster than its peers and commands a significantly higher valuation. Over the past year, COST stock has rallied over 55%, nearly double what the S & P 500 returned over the same period. Additionally, with such a high-priced stock and options premiums elevated with earnings on deck in two weeks, we have to get creative to structure a trade to seek bearish exposure heading into earnings. I'm looking out to the June 7 th weekly expiration and buying a $700/730/775 broken wing put butterfly for $9.72 debit.

That's because the amount of money that's converted is subject to ordinary income tax – which can be as high as 37%. Even for those who are taxed at a lower rate, a sufficiently large conversion might bump them into a higher tax bracket. Long-term capital gains taxes have three tiers, depending on an investor's income: 0%, 15% and 20%. New York CNN —The only bet riskier than buying meme stocks like GameStop may be cheering for their decline. That’s the lesson Wall Street’s short-sellers are learning the hard way this week. See here: For the first four months of the year, GameStop short-sellers — investors who bet on a stock’s decline — were sitting on $392 million in gains, up nearly 50%. To understand the meme stock phenomenon, it helps to understand a bit of the tribalism underpinning it. Today’s GameStop shorts aren’t likely to hang on and repeat the mistakes of their Melvin Capital brethren.

GameStop and fellow meme stock AMC Entertainment are each up more than 160% over the past two days. "This isn't 2021 when the world was locked down and awash with liquidity," said Antoni Trenchev, cofounder of crypto exchange Nexo. Noelle Acheson, economist and author of the "Crypto is Macro Now" newsletter, added that the meme stock run was "more of a revving of engines than a full take-off" and that macro issues are still pressuring bitcoin. The rapid shift in expectations away from multiple rate cuts this year may have created a trading opportunity around Wednesday's inflation data, according to Bank of America. As meme stocks once again dominate discourse on Wall Street, a Goldman Sachs basket is benefiting as hedge funds try to cover themselves. Goldman's "short basket," known officially as the GS Most Short Rolling Index, has jumped along with the resurgence of the meme-stock craze seen this week. When the original meme-stock mania took place, hedge funds rushed to cover their short positions as everyday investors squeezed them. GameStop short sellers lost almost $1 billion in Monday's rally. That experience even led to the demise of some hedge funds like Melvin Capital .

New York CNN —We in the financial press tend to talk about the meme stock revolution (or craze, or frenzy, or mass delusion) in the past tense. Another meme stock, Trump Media and Technology Group, the Donald Trump-owned media company that controls Truth Social, brought back memories of the 2021 GameStop bonanza. With Trump Media, Trump supporters and other speculative traders pumped up the stock not for its (extraordinarily lousy) fundamentals, but more as a vote of support for the former president’s campaign and even a barometer of his winning chances. We’re not quite as exuberant today as we were then, but we’re still within spitting distance of all-time highs on major stock indices, Sosnick notes. In some ways, the arrival in the spring of Donald Trump’s media company reawakened the meme stock monster.

Agtech startup Rize aims to lower rice farming's methane emissions in southeast Asia. The Singapore-based startup recently raised $14 million in Series A funding from investors. A 10th of the world's methane emissions comes from rice farming, as bacteria break down in wet rice paddies and release the gas. To reduce rice's methane footprint, agtech startup Rize is working with small rice farmers in Vietnam and Indonesia — locals who manage a farm about the size of one and a half soccer fields. Rize's on-the-ground scientists use the startup's tech platform and green growing techniques to help these farmers grow rice more sustainably and increase their harvest.

That’s all that’s left until the combined Social Security accounts — the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund and the Disability Insurance Trust Fund — are likely to run out of money and can no longer pay full scheduled benefits, according to the latest report of the Social Security trustees. (Even with no fix at all — highly unlikely — incoming payroll taxes would cover 83 percent of scheduled benefits.) What I do worry about is what Washington’s patch for Social Security will look like. The cold math shows that fixing Social Security in a lasting way will require a combination of tax increases and benefit cuts. And both parties’ leaders — President Biden and former President Donald Trump — have ruled benefit cuts off the table.
